Information for Referrers

Medicare referrals for psychological therapy are welcome.

How to Refer

Referrals for therapy under the Better Access Medicare initiative are welcome.

Referrals can be sent via secure fax or email. Please ensure the referral meets Medicare requirements.

Once a referral is received, the client will be contacted and invited to register in the client portal to book an appointment.

Clients may also submit an enquiry via the website, including details of their referral.

Medicare Requirements

For Medicare rebates under Better Access, referrals must include:

  • Client full name
  • Date of birth
  • Symptoms and/or diagnosis
  • Number of sessions referred for (no more than 6)
  • Confirmation that a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) has been prepared
  • GP name, provider number, signature, and date

An MHTP alone is not sufficient without a referral.

Medicare rebates can only be processed where referral requirements are met.

Assessments

Psychological assessments do not require a Mental Health Treatment Plan.

Referrals for assessment may include a brief summary of the referral question and relevant history.

Reports and Communication

With client consent, brief reports will be provided to the referring GP in accordance with Medicare requirements.
